Cheba Hut’s plans for growth are ambitious; fifty stores by 2021, and 200 stores by 2025. However, if our past and our present are any indications of our success, this goal is nowhere near unreachable. Cheba Hut has been growing quickly and methodically over the past few years, with twenty-five franchises awarded and fourteen locations open. There are also plans to open stores in Texas, Georgia, and California, as more cities want a taste of our famous “toasted” subs. Our “toasted” sandwich franchise is trying to gain more traction nationally and, while we are much more than just our theme, marijuana becoming more accepted every year is only helping. Fun fact: there are already thirty-three states that have some form of marijuana legalization available and we are loving riding “the green wave.” 

“We’re getting ready to push nationally,” Seth Larsen, Chief Relationship Officer, said. “We want to be smart about our growth.”

Cheba Hut differentiates itself from other sub franchises not only by its fun psychedelic theme (Acapulco Gold, Silver Haze anyone?) but also by its excellent food that is made fresh with the best ingredients, welcoming atmosphere, customer service, and interesting flavor combinations. At most locations, the sandwich franchise also has a full bar, and even live music, making it a great spot to hang out and enjoy a beer.

Cheba Hut has finally arrived at The University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus! UNLV has long been anticipating a Cheba Hut, since June of 2018, and students and faculty alike were THRILLED about the announcement that they had a place to get “toasted” with their buds! Despite several delays occurring, with the opening being delayed from the end of 2018 until mid-March, the soft opening will finally take place on March 22, 2019. Students and faculty alike will finally be able to try the famous sub-franchise that serves subs with weed-themed names such as Acapulco Gold, Panama Red, and Silver Haze, “munchies” like goo balls and pretzel nuggets, and much more! Additionally, each store has a unique “secret stash” menu featuring sandwiches that have been hand-concocted by that store’s team, as well as a full-service bar!

The official grand opening date has not been announced yet, however it is scheduled to take place shortly after the soft opening. Operating hours have not been announced either, but our stores are traditionally open from 10 in the morning until midnight.

A second Cheba Hut “Toasted” Subs franchise location was just opened in Albuquerque, New Mexico! New Franchise Owner, Isaac Montoya, has been in the franchising business since his college days and he is very familiar with the sub franchise, as a company.

“Cheba Hut has kind of always been in the family,” Montoya said. “My parents took over the Cheba Hut near the university with some partners a few years ago when I was going to UNM. In 2014, I actually took over my parents’ business partner’s shares in Cheba Hut, so that’s kind of how I fell into the whole role of owning and operating my own franchise.”

Although Isaac is a fan of Cheba Hut’s infamous marijuana theme, he recognizes that not everyone is, clarifying that Cheba Hut only has one mission – to serve excellent subs.

“We get people that come in all the time with a stigma about what we serve,” he said. “At the end of the day, we serve great food, and that’s the bottom line.”

Montoya is excited about owning and operating this Cheba Hut, and plans to expand to other areas of Albuquerque, adding to the currently-existing 25 Cheba Huts nationwide.

Creating this plan is easy, but reaching the goal will be challenging, especially as Cheba Hut is not accepting outside funding.

How Cheba Hut is Focusing on Growth

One of the main ways in which Cheba Hut hopes to attract a larger consumer base is to create a unique and fun ambiance in their restaurants. The sandwich franchise includes a full bar, and live music (in some locations) on certain days, making it a fun spot to come in and hang out.

Another way Cheba Hut plans on raising funds for expansion is to attract more group diners to the restaurant. Jennings hopes this will increase the amount of time that consumers will ultimately spend at these locations. Cheba Hut will place their focus on excellent customer service, a huge variety of menu options, and cannabis pun-filled wall art in order to achieve this.

“When we started this 21 years ago, people told me ‘You’re nuts, you’re crazy, you can’t do this.’ They definitely thought I was selling weed out the back, and I wasn’t,” Jennings recalled. “There’s a definite green wave that’s happening. But we’ve been paddling hard for 21 years.”

Cheba Hut, the marijuana themed sandwich franchise, is bringing its signature toasted subs and “munchies” to Colorado Springs! Cheba Hut is already a renowned company is Colorado, and hopes to bring their fun and authentic dining experience to many more locations. Cheba Hut, besides offering a host of marijuana-themed food products, such as sandwiches with names like “Chronic” and “Acapulco Gold”, also offers a full bar, which encourages patrons to take their time and relax!

“They come in groups; they come in packs,” COO MarcTorres said. “They come four people, six people, 10 people at a time because they want a cool place to hang out. It’s not your normal sub shop, by any means. The bar really kind of helps create that destination environment.”

This Colorado Springs Cheba Hut location is set to open in the beginning of June. This opening will mark the sub franchise’s 27th location across seven states.

“As soon as I saw that line at Dutch Bros. this past summer,” Torres said, “that was the light. I was like, ‘People in Colorado Springs are ready for Cheba Hut now.’”

Since Cheba Hut “Toasted” Subs opened its doors in 1998, we have been blazing a trail that few have considered. From the marijuana theme of our restaurant to our food and, perhaps most importantly, our customer service, we are unmatched by anybody in the sandwich concepts industry.

Our willingness to adapt and provide basic hospitality (like splitting a check for a group of eaters), is something that most restaurant employees scoff at. For us here at Cheba Hut, though, we’re trying to bring as many people in the door and treat them in a way that keeps them coming back.

Group dining can often turn awkward when the check arrives. Even with conveniences such as Venmo, the most pleasant dinners can become tense when it comes time to divvy up the bill, especially when restaurants are only willing to help so much in the separate checks department.

Cheba Hut can cater to both. We’re just a good option for groups of people. We take hospitality very seriously, and we want to provide excellent customer service. Additionally, our ordering app makes it easy to split tickets and split costs around the restaurant. We also make it a point to offer multiple seating options to our group diners, including a large, communal table, seating at the bar, high top seats, and an outdoor patio area.

For a typical sandwich chain, customers have a tendency to walk into the restaurant to get a sandwich and then they turn around and leave. This goes against everything that we stand for at Cheba Hut.
