Cheba Hut’s plans for growth are ambitious; fifty stores by 2021, and 200 stores by 2025. However, if our past and our present are any indications of our success, this goal is nowhere near unreachable. Cheba Hut has been growing quickly and methodically over the past few years, with twenty-five franchises awarded and fourteen locations open. There are also plans to open stores in Texas, Georgia, and California, as more cities want a taste of our famous “toasted” subs. Our “toasted” sandwich franchise is trying to gain more traction nationally and, while we are much more than just our theme, marijuana becoming more accepted every year is only helping. Fun fact: there are already thirty-three states that have some form of marijuana legalization available and we are loving riding “the green wave.”

 “That sold a lot better just because people were willing to take a chance on something they can’t typically get at other places. Our LTOs are more successful when they’re a little bit off the wall—the crazier the better.”

Our theme is secondary to our legendary service, food, and atmosphere, all three of which we are well-known for.

“It’s not what drives us. We’re food-driven first and foremost,” Chief Relationship Officer, Seth Larsen said. “We get people who come in every day who don’t understand the underlying theme of Cheba Hut. We’re fine with that.”

While Cheba Hut is generally described as a fast-casual sandwich shop, we actually make it a point to get people into the store and have them sit down, relax, and enjoy themselves. This is why our restaurants come equipped with a fully-stocked bar and an incredible patio.

“Patios are a huge part of what we do,” Larsen said, adding that the Johnstown location will have “an amazing patio looking onto the mountains — probably the best patio in our system.”

“Additionally, people have changed the way they eat,” he said. Before, it was common to grab a 12-inch sandwich with chips and a drink. “Now, people typically come in a group, have an appetizer, eat smaller portions and have a cocktail or two.”

Previously, Cheba Hut’s Founder and Owner, Scott Jennings, has mentioned that now is the ideal time for expansion – thanks to the “Green Bubble.” The Green Bubble Scott is referring to is the increase in support for legalized medicinal and recreational marijuana that is sweeping the nation. In fact, as of today, thirty-three states, as well as Washington D.C., have passed laws that broadly legalize marijuana in some form.

Cheba Hut Discusses Expansion into Non-Traditional Locations

There’s always a rush to find the next big hotspot for success, especially in the quick-service restaurant market. People spend time and money in an effort to crunch analytics in determining where to open new eateries. These numbers are generally based on historical data that tracks consumer usage at foodservice outlets, restaurant density, and the correlations that might exist between traffic growth and population growth. QSR recently published an article titled, “2018 Growth 40 Breakdown” in which the article listed the top-40 locations to expand in terms of restaurant trends. Why is this important? For a company like Cheba Hut that is currently expanding rapidly, it’s important to find the best places to expand into and “non-traditional” locations are quickly gaining traction to other locations which might make sense – on paper.

The Brownsville Herald interviewed Seth Larsen, Cheba Hut’s Chief Relationship Officer, to discuss these non-traditional markets and what it means for people in the Restaurant Industry.

“These non-traditional markets are becoming more attractive, especially to fast-casual emerging brands,” Larsen said. “Just because the demographics are good, there’s a little more disposable income down there, the cost of living is a little bit less than some of the traditional markets that we would be looking at.”
