Tim previously worked in telecommunications for 20 years before transitioning into the restaurant business where he stayed for the next 10 years. However, he had always wanted to own his own business but had never found the perfect fit, until he discovered the incredible sandwich franchise known as Cheba Hut “Toasted” Subs. Tim first discovered Cheba Hut while on a ski trip with his friends in Dillon, Colorado. He loved the food and service he received at the restaurant and, upon further research, Tim learned about the restaurant’s quirky background and the strong business leadership skills of the executive team. Cheba Hut was the ideal restaurant for Tim to franchise with; the relaxed vibe, fun theme, and family-like atmosphere just sealed the deal. Tim knew that Cheba Hut would be perfect for the central Florida market, and upon his second visit to one of our sandwich franchise locations, Tim decided to open his own location in Florida.

Did you know that St. Augustine, Florida is the oldest city in the United States? We certainly didn’t! Did you also know that Florida’s first Cheba Hut “Toasted” Subs location will be opening in St. Augustine? Well, that we are certain about! New Franchise Owner, Dusty Derickson, will be opening this location in St. Augustine, along with two additional Cheba Hut locations near college campuses at later dates.

“It’s going to be me, my wife and my son tackling this thing, and my daughter has also expressed interest, so it’s going to be a family-owned and operated business,” said Dusty. “I think that speaks well to the customer experience and a commitment to warm, welcoming customer service.”

Our “toasted” sub franchise will not be Dusty’s first time owning a business. Dusty is also the proud owner of a Dairy Queen in Indiana, which he purchased in college after working his way up the ranks. Dusty worked there for many years, learning the ins and outs of owning a restaurant, until he and his wife decided to leave the management up to a trusted employee so that they could retire to Florida. He and his family started looking for another franchise opportunity when his son expressed interest in getting involved in the industry and, after exploring many options, landed on the Cheba Hut.

 “We started researching franchise options, and it took us a long time to find what we wanted, but that was Cheba Hut,” said Dusty.

The Dericksons began to communicate regularly with our franchise development team before they traveled to beautiful Colorado to meet the executives. Dusty signed on after meeting the team and seeing the establishment, loving the fun laid-back attitude and an easily manageable restaurant model.

“We went out to Discovery Day the first week of March and met with Seth, Mark and Scott. That meeting and experience just confirmed that Cheba Hut was the right fit,” said Derickson. “We came home, signed off on some paperwork and hit the ground running.”

The first of three locations is scheduled to open September of 2019!

“Back in ’98, it was a huge risk. A lot of my friends were dealing with some terrible laws that messed up their lives.”

Cheba Hut will always be a pioneer in the marijuana industry, breaking down preconceptions and negative stereotypes when it mattered most. Using the edgy theme as a statement to free speech, Scott Jennings took a huge risk and now is reaping the rewards with a loyal customer base and an ever-expanding franchise. We have already chronicled our desire to have over 50 Cheba Hut “Toasted” Subs locations opened by the year 2021 and 200 locations opened by the year 2025. Note – Though this seems ambitious, we are well on our way to reaching both of these goals. We have multiple restaurant locations that are set to open in 2019 and we have numerous deals that are in place to carry us from 2019 to well beyond! One of these deals is a three-pack agreement that was recently signed by Josh Burdick and Justin Beatty. Burdick and Beatty will be bringing the best sub franchise that the citizens of Atlanta have ever eaten and the competition isn’t even close!

Josh Burdick is an Atlanta entertainment lawyer. His business partner, Justin Beatty, is the beverage director for Fifth Group Restaurants. They are excited about what bringing a Cheba Hut means to the Atlanta area and they’re also excited about the idea of promoting their Cheba Hut location as the ideal “third-meal” spot! Elaborating further, Beatty knows that both of their backgrounds will be hugely beneficial in this regard:

“A third-meal [offering] has been dabbled with at other Cheba Hut locations, but because both of us come from more high-end bar and entertainment backgrounds—places that are typically open later—we wanted to create that revenue stream and bring in new guests. We know that we can be both a top lunch spot and a high-demand nighttime spot, too,” Beatty explained.

Both Burdick and Beatty are looking forward to incorporating and tying into the local music scene in the area and have plans to make Cheba Hut be a hub for music, just a casual hangout spot, or as both! Our Chief Relationship Officer, Seth Larsen, says that he is excited to see what Burdick and Beatty have planned for their Cheba Hut locations in Atlanta:

“Justin and Josh are both creative and people-focused—they’re passionate about bringing guests an inviting atmosphere, craveable food, and an “above-and-beyond” service experience, all of which is central to the Cheba Hut brand,” Larsen said. “They’re also excited to bring their passions into the space and create a place guests won’t want to leave, and that hospitality mindset is what we’re all about. That’s Cheba culture and then some.”
